Hauz Khas Social, Hauz khas Village, New Delhi

So when Social Offline, one of my favourite restaurant chains in the Delhi NCR launches their special Summer Menu, could I keep my hands and palate from relishing their well thought dishes? An absolute no!

Unkiller/ Abra Kebab-ra veg kebab platter: Highly unlikely for me to go for a full blown vegetarian kebab platter? Yes, well, I have outgrown my choice for the meaty dishes and a once in a while platter “in which no animals were harmed” does sound appetizing. The mellow paneer tikka drenched in pickle like spices did tantalize the taste buds but could have been grilled more. The Achaari soya chaap was amazingly grilled and had a thin crust with a tender chewy interior. The tandoori momos were good and had a hearty filling of finely chopped mushrooms, beans, onion, broccoli, carrots, cabbage and baby corn. The spicy Malai mushroom was grilled well and was melt in the mouth with the lovely cream adorning it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Celebrity Bhelpuri: Let us move over from our usual bhelpuri prepared with puffed rice to the one fashioned with puffed Amaranth, quinoa crisps, flaxseeds, granola, pomegranate, peanuts, freshly cut kiwi and oranges. The crunchy texture of the ensemble coupled with the sweet and peppery flavours bursting on your palate does transform you into heaven. Moreover, it is healthy too! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Shiitake and mushroom pizza: Special mention – The chef specifically doubled the quantity of mushrooms when he came to know about my love for the chewy fungi. The pizza was what an ideal pizza should be like – thin crust with no charred remains, optimum quantity of cheese that stretches but is not overwhelming, flavourful tomato sauce topping and well grilled shiitake and button mushrooms. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Anda mutton seekh paratha: Why did they serve me this? Because I can not get over the food coma experienced while gorging on this lovely dish. The firm yet tender and heavily spiced mutton seekh kebabs were paired with the bland and flaky Malabar paratha which had a thim omelette on the other side. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Summer fruit pavlova: Finally someone here knows how to dish out a pavlova which does not taste like our humble “batasha”! The crispy and airy pavlova was baked to perfection with slightly caramelized edges and topped with fresh cream and fruits – a layered dessert exuding the summery charm. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Peanut butter fondant with vanilla ice cream: Well, well, yours truly finished this combination on her own with no qualms at all! How could I stop myself from feasting upon the moderately sweet, warm, melt in the mouth chocolate fondant topped with melted peanut butter and peanuts? And when I got slightly exhausted from the warm sweet and salty ensemble, I gorged upon the cool and creamy vanilla ice cream. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Overall rating: 5/5

Caterspoint, DLF phase 3, Gurgaon

Move over Fresh Menu, because Caterspoint is here! Why am I comparing this place to Fresh Mneu, which has already carved a niche of its own in Delhi/NCR? Because the diversity of dishes offered here can give a tough competition to Fresh Menu.

Just one look at the site, and you are baffled. Because these guys offer all day breakfast, fresh juices and smoothies, salads, pasta, calorie counted meals, desserts and heavenly shakes. And the prices are pretty optimal considering the quantity.

But I am pretty disappointed with the packaging. They sent me heavy smoothie and dessert jars in a light paper bag which was not sturdy enough to handle the load. Anyway, moving on to the food, let me share my food gasmic journey :

Khatti meethi bhel puri : A perfect evening time snack for the tea lovers! With the right blend of puffed rice, spiced peanuts and dal moth, this bhel puri is as good as the rustic road side one. RECOMMENDED.

Smoky Chicken Jalapeno Sandwich : A healthy alternative to our comfort food, this one is made from multi grain bread which is not too thick. The filling is made up of fresh and thin lettuce, finely sliced jalapenos, juliennes of red bell peppers and cucumber and dollops of smoked juicy chicken pieces in the melted cheese and mustard sauce. RECOMMENDED.

Vietnamese grilled chicken salad : A colourful salad with an equal dearth of flavours, this is a must try. The freshness of lettuce, the juiciness and tanginess of cherry tomatoes, black olives and jalapenos, the necessary crunchiness of lightly blanched broccoli and the spiciness of the juicy chicken will surely make your day. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Creamy cheesy chicken penne : Delhi is blossoming with outlets serving pasta. So why would I recommend Caterspoint? Because the creamy penne cooked by them is a class apart dish. With the prominence of fresh cream instead of cheese, the subtle sourness is pretty prominent here. The well boiled pasta is drenched in this food gasmic creamy sauce along with fresh black olives, bell peppers, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes and parsley. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Exotic fruit custard : This was good and passable. The creamy custard was moderately sweetened and had fresh pomegranate, plum and apple slices.

Apple Blueberry porridge : I wish I could have this porridge everyday. It was topped with fine apple slices, almonds, blueberry and had strawberry jam at the bottom. When you mix the layers, you get a very fine dessert with myriad flavours. The typical sweetness of strawberries, the creaminess of thick milk and the freshness of the fruits make this a masterpiece. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Wild Blueberry Shake : Another shake to give you the healthy sugar rush. The shake is thick and well blended with bananas and blueberries. The moderate sweetness of the fruits and the pink colour is pretty attractive. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Cold brew coffee : I am not a coffee lover but I liked this one. The flavour of coffee was subtle here and the low fat sweetened milk had a good consistency.

I could have given them a 4.5, but because of packaging issue, I lowered the rating to 4. I really hope they improve.

Factory by Sutra, Sector 29, Gurgaon

In this age of cut throat competition in the food industry, the latest trend to emerge is the emergence of themed based restaurants. Sometimes you are disappointed by the themes and sometimes you are baffled by the dexterity with which the décor and the dishes are done.

Factory by Sutra is a microbrewery situated in sector 29, Gurgaon. The unplastered walls, the over hanging ropes, portraits of the 20th century factory workers and the round plates of factory workers justify the theme of this huge resto-bar.

Moving on to the items I tried :

Natwarlol : A lovely mocktail made up of crushed and strained pomegranates and apples and chaat masala, this is a must try if you love fresh and sweet flavours of fruits with the zingy flavour of chaat masala.

Kurkuri bhindi : A very innovative dish, I must say. Fine julliennes of lady finger or okra fried in gram flour and served with tartar sauce. The okra jullienes are way too crispy but some were quite thin and hence were a but burnt.

Delhi 6 : Our usual paani poori is well innovated here with the filling of another staple of India – bhel poori. Eat it and there is an explosion of so many flavours. The gol gappas are light, thin and airy; the bhel poori is crunchy, sweet and tangy and the sev in the bhel has a very fine quality. RECOMMENDED.

Chilli chicken pita pocket : Served with a sweet chilli sauce, this is an innovative fusion of the Bao and the pita pockets. The soft baos are shaped into pita pockets and filled with a lovely filling of chilli chicken. The small chunks of chicken were sweet as well as spicy in flavour and were ohhh-so-soft soft and chewy. Each and every bite was redolent with flavours. The sweetness of finely chopped onions and bell peppers was so prominent here that you will go gaga over it. I wish it was served with a different sauce as the served sauce had the same flavour as the pita filling.

Chicken dimsums : These will definitely transfer you into a long food coma. Topped with red chilli ppoweder and chopped coriander, the dimsums had a moist, soft and thin skin with a filling of finely minced chewy chicken. The dip served with these was way too hot and spicy – made up with milk, red chilli sauce, schezwan sauce and chicken broth. RECOMMENDED.

Laal maas pao : The fusion gets better here. This dish has the softest buns or paos you will ever taste – well buttered and not crumbling into chunks. The laal maas was exemplary – topped with the finest julliennes of ginger which gave their characteristic pungent flavour. The mutton was ohh-so-succulent and chewy and the gravy was spicy and thick. RECOMMENDED.

Fish in lemon butter sauce : The fish could have been grilled more as it was disintegrating and lacked a fine crust which is a characteristic of such dishes. The sauce was thick, had the lovely amalgamation of chopped garlic and parsley, but a bit salty and could have been thicker. Since lemon was squeezed over the fish, the saltiness in the sauce was enhanced.

Chocolate rum balls : What a dessert! The usual rum filled chocolate balls were mashed and the thick mixture was made into balls and coated with thick dark chocolate syrup and topped with white chocolate shavings. The balls were melt in the mouth, soft, gooey and had a bitter sweet taste. RECOMMENDED.
