If there is one cuisine I can have any time, anywhere, it is Italian. A cheese drenched and creamy dish with a glass of red wine – my my, the evening is set.

Artusi is a luxurious fine dine Italian restaurant located in One Horizon Centre. The decor is classical European with intricate chandeliers carrying mini candles hanging down from the top. The background music is mostly from Godfather and the paintings on the wall delicately beckon the art connoisseurs.

Artusi is well known for their authentic ingredients and freshly prepared hand made pasta. What could be more delightful than having Italian dishes straight from the kitchens of Italian moms!

Shrimp cocktail: Hats off to the presentation! The juicy shrimps lathered in pink cocktail sauce (Salsa Rosa), enveloped in a lettuce leaf and are served in a Martini glass. The sauce lends its creaminess and tanginess to the delicate shrimps.

Burrata: So heavenly creamy! This fresh cheese was served with a crunchy toasted bread, plump cherry tomatoes and basil pesto sauce – a very light yet fulfilling appetiser.

Torino di Pori: More cheese! The quiche or the cheese and leeks filled tart is creamy and has a crumbly texture. The Gorgonzola cheese adds more depth to this dish by lending its heavy buttery consistency.

Cappelletti with mushroom: The minute delicate pasta pockets are indeed a sight to marvel at. And when they are filled with cheese and served with juicy mushrooms – Mama Mia!

Paglia e Fieno: The finely prepared angel hair pasta – yellow and green colour – is artistically served in a tomato based creamy sauce with succulent mushrooms. The ensemble is very flavourful and slurpy.

Tiramisu: I never ever had a better version of Tiramisu! The mascarpone cheese is so light, fluffy, airy and creamy and the sponge layer soaked in brandy and coffee is pretty thin. Do not forget to try this dessert.

Winters have officially arrived in Delhi NCR and it is time to come out of your closet and enjoy the glorious winter sun. The poisonous haze has gone for good now and you can embrace the chilly weather which is there to stay for a month or so.

And what better to do on a weekend than have a brunch on a roof top from where the Gurgaon skyline is visible? Located at the Clarens Hotel, Sector 29, Gurgaon, Raise the Bar Rooftop offers one of a kind experience. There is a huge bar counter running along half of the length and a special dessert and patisserie counter awaits you when you enter this place. The polished wooden interiors with a good seating arrangement promise a relaxed ambience and a slew of well trained servers is there to make your stay memorable.

Patisserie special: All cheese – oregano filled pungent and layered Adam cheese, herb cheese filled with chilli flakes and gouda are prepared from cow milk and are imported. The crackers are light and crunchy, the pickled olives not so sour, raw papaya and cucumber subtle and the focaccia airy.  RECOMMENDED.

Gnochhi salad: The gnocchi is oh so smooth and melt in the mouth and served on a pan fried spinach base with hints of garlic and ginger. The spinach is not so bitter and is easy to gobble on. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Barley salad with chicken and green beans: The tangy chicken sausage leaves you in a deep food coma, while the crunchy grilled green beans, plump and juicy cherry tomatoes add more depth to this salad. The best part – the sauce has penetrated to every element. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Fried chicken popsickles: Hats off to the chef who thought of this. Who wants ice popsickles if you can have fried chicken one? And they go well in the winters too. The finest chicken mince fried in bread crumbs to a lovely brown and golden hue and served with garlic mayo can leave you in splits. The crispy exterior and the soft mince like interior will definitely win your heart. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Herb crusted sole fillet: The very thin layer of herb curst with mellow insides – perfection of a well seared sole fillet. The potato wedges are served as sides and slightly soft. RECOMMENDED.

Yakisoba noodles with vegetables: Disappointment. The noodles did not taste like Japanese noodles in Yakisoba sauce but resembled a desi pan fried version of our street food variant in flavours.

Crème Brulee: Not good at all. The well defined crust is not there and the flavour of the cheesecake resembled the taste of raw eggs.

Andrea’s Eatery, Select Citywalk, Saket, New Delhi

Authentic cuisine seems to be the rage these days and when coupled with “organic” and “healthy”, the foodies are bound to get something different yet exciting.
Located in the bustling Select Citywalk, this little restaurant is bound to keep you hooked to their amazing menu. All their ingredients are freshly imported and organically produced. No extra flavours, condiments or preservatives in their dishes, only pure culinary skill and technique here.
Another note: They have a policy of serving the leftover food to the beggars and homeless people near Select Citywalk – applause for this initiative!
Summer is back Italian Basil: When “organic” is the word, you expect fresh ingredients in your beverage with no syrups or artificial flavours. Same goes for this one. A refreshing concoction of Italian basil leaves and oranges with no extra zing is as home made as it can get. The bitterness of basil cuts the tanginess of oranges and the subtle sweetness of the ensemble is there to suit everyone. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Fresh Butter Garlic Prawns: This recipe is a local one from the famed Anjuna beach and does not disappoint you. The prawns are sourced from Cochin, so you get the authentic “prawn” flavour and are served with a green salad, butter based dip and French fries. The prawns are smoked to perfection with the shells intact with creamy and juicy insides but with a lesser amount of salt though. The citrus salad is amazing – spinach, lettuce and mustard leaves, yellow and red bell peppers and orange drizzled with light lemon vinaigrette. The crunchy leaves and vegetables coupled with the subtle tanginess of the dressing leave you asking for more.

Pro-tip: You have to eat the prawns with the salad so that the flavours are balanced.
Though I really wished that the “garlic” in this dish was more prominent. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Norwegian smoked salmon and cream: Drool worthy to the core! The smooth fettucine is prepared in home made Tarragon sauce and cream with smoked salmon and topped with grated cheese – mouth watering combination? The salmon is very subtly smoked and is tender and compliments the pasta well. The menu mentions that this should be served with sautéed organic greens but I was served with buttered crunchy garlic bread. RECOMMENDED.

Cremino: Why did I taste this? A variation of our beloved Tiramisu, this is fashioned from Mascarpone cheese, Amaretto soaked in coffee and topped with cacoa dust and coffee flavoured cookies. Surprisingly the coffee is not bitter at all and is pleasant in taste with the cheese being so smooth and creamy that you can not stop once you start binging on this. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Blueberry Cherry Smoothie: Organic blueberries and cherries freshly grinded in fresh chilled yoghurt with no extra sugar or flavours – HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Waffles: Served with Nutella, cream, butter, Maple syrup, musk melon and kiwi slices – a perfect breakfast item. The waffles were not airy and crunchy and had gone soft and chewy probably due to the time spent in clicking the perfect picture but when eaten with Nutella and cream – BOMB! The texture was brittle and crumbly though. RECOMMENDED.

This was not the first time I explored the varied dishes from the Bueno Café. Being an employee resident of Gurgaon, I have ordered quite a few times from this wonder of an outlet and have never been disappointed. So when the opportunity came to visit their outlet in MGF Metropolis, I could not keep my gluttony cravings in control!

Puneet Jain, Corporate chef of Bueno and the co-founder has curated the menu here and I am pretty impressed by them. All the breads, compote, shakes and even pita chips are made in house with no added flavouring agents and preservatives. The chef believes in keeping his dishes subtle and wants the customers to savour every ingredient in the item – hence you are assured that you taste the best of the lot.

Peri peri chicken sandwich: Fresh multi grain soft Panini breads sandwiching chewy and mellow chicken along with the firm cheddar and topped with peri peri spices and some gherkins for tanginess – explosion of flavours! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Chicken Ham and cheese sandwich: Lovely Brioche breads enclosing firm cheddar and chewy chicken ham with the addition of fresh mustard sauce – what more can you ask for? The Brioche breads are heavenly soft because of the presence of butter. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Belgian Chocolate Shakes: Ahhhh, such denseness and the bitterness of real Belgian chocolates! Add to it, the freshly prepared compte and you are in for a creamy and slurpy goodness. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Blueberry shake: I really admire those chefs who use the natural sweetness of fruits to prepare shakes and desserts. This shake was fresh, as expected with no extra sugar and made with in house compote. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Baked blueberry cheesecake: Prepared wkith natural blueberry compote (blueberry pulp used), diet conscious dessert lovers will adore this. It has three layers – top blueberry pulp resembling jelly, middle layer of soft and subtle cheesecake and the base layer of pulverised biscuits. The combined effect of all the three layers in indescribable. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Smoked veggies Italian Ciabatta: Ciabatta is actually a French bread which has a crispy exterior. The sandwich was one of a kind enclosing smoked vegetables – zucchinis and bell peppers, cheddar and a thin pesto layer. The high point of this sandwich was the maintenance of the juiciness of the vegetables in addition to the pesto layer which was not too overpowering. Though the sandwich was a bit dry and hence difficult to eat from the edges.

Gooey chocolate brownie: The heart melting warmth and remarkable fluffiness of this soft and gooey brownie will leave you asking for more. The best port is that only unsalted butter is used here with no signs of grease. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Orange and cranberry cake: I thought that Chaayos was one outlet preparing their cakes with fresh fruits and retaining their natural flavours. But Bueno proves me wrong. The characteristic sweet tangy flavours of orange and cranberries is well defined here. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The Junction, Hauz Khas, New Delhi

This new property in Delhi is actually a junction of multiple cuisine trains. Spread across a huge area with different sections, this one boasts of a distinct sushi and dimsums bar, The Big Baker with a lovely assortment of desserts, a pizzeria, an outdoor seating area under the shade of trees (full marks for that) and indoor fine dine area. The Junction redefines the word multi-cuisine for you by serving multiple cuisines from all the courses. Here are a few of them that I recently tasted:

Veg pizza: The thinnest crust with a lovely succulency and the chewiness and juiciness of yellow and green zucchinis should not be missed. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Chicken dimsums: The exceptionally thin exterior is attractive but the extremely tangy flavour of the mine chicken mince is not acceptable.

Mushroom wantons: I usually avoid wantons because they are deep fried but I could not keep my hands off this one. The finely chopped mushrooms were enveloped in a chewy exterior whichw as fried to crispy perfection. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

California roll: Their sushis are a must try and this one was a burst of subtle flavours – sweet, tangy and piquant. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Mac n cheese: Ahh, the gooey cheese works its magic again! The al dante macaroni drenched in warm parmesan with bits of chicken is one dish which you would not want to miss! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Veg mezze platter: I have never ever tasted a mezze platter like this one! For the first time, the pita breads were slathered with butter and were soft yet crispy – the characteristic brittleness was absent here. Additionally, the beetroot flavoured dip was ohh-so-delicious! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Prawn dimsums: If you leave the intense watery aroma of prawns aside, the these dimsums are heavenly! The skin and the filling are perfect and better than the chicken ones here.

Chicken and cashewnut dumplings: Who could have thought that the nuttiness and crunchiness of the cashewnuts could be used to innovate the usual chicken dimsums? These guys did and it turned out excellent! And the form of these lovelies are way too attractive. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Winter special menu at Pizza Express, Ambience Mall, Gurgaon

I thought Jaime’s Italiano was the go to place when it came to authentic European cuisine. But after a rushed visit to Pizza Express, I found another heaven for subtle European cuisine. The décor is elegant and classy with polished marble interiors and spacious ambience. The colossal open kitchen and bar are as immaculate as a French fine dine. And the servers, what to say! They know their cuisine well and are quick to suggest dishes suited to your palate.

So they have introduced their winter menu and if you miss it, then please don’t complain! This special menu is available till 30th January and here are a few of them:

Creamy mushroom soup: Boy, hats off to the chef for conjuring this warm liquid of pure brilliance. The soup is smooth, creamy and has the perfect consistency. The occasional bite of black pepper accompanied with fresh mushroom halves is as food gasmic as it can get. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Dough balls with spinach artichoke dip: The dough balls are freshly baked, warm and light to eat. And when taken in combination with the creamy rich spinach artichoke dip, a fine balance is achieved. The dip is made with fresh cream and cheese and is thick and smooth with the bitterness of spinach not very prominent – a feat in itself. The sporadic chewiness of capers is a welcome surprise. RECOMMENDED.

Pollo Cajun Pizza: Created in rectangular form, with fresh cheese, capers, chicken and bell peppers adorning it on the top, this pizza defines the word finesse for you. The pizza is thin crusted and not too heavy or burnt. The fluffiness of the thin crust is commendable but I wish it justified the spiciness level of the word “Cajun” associated with it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Arrabiata Cannolini: When I mention about a pasta dish cooked in red sauce being excellent, you have to believe me! Because I am not a huge fan of arrabiata sauce. The red sauce presented here was freshly made with proper straining of the tomatoes done. The cannolini pasta sheets were fresh and light and the mixture of ricotta and spinach was way too smooth, creamy and melt in the mouth. RECOMMENDED.

Chocolate cheesecake : Dark chocolate lovers, cheer up! Because this three layered cheesecake will compel you to keep coming here time and again. The top layer is chocolate ganache which is a bit thick and bitter. The cheesecake is a bit dense than the usual cheese cake so as to balance the heavy ganache layer. The bottom layer is of cake mix which gives depth to this dessert. RECOMMENDED.

Welcome to Café Amaretto, an elegant yet classy place with a touch of artsy grace.

The place is done up in soothing white interiors reminding you of the typical Italian restaurants and in the evening, this café is lit up in romantic lights, thus amplifying the ambience.

Shayal Taunk, the owner of this lovely place, is an enthusiastic young entrepreneur with a taste of the Italian way of life. She started this café as an art gallery but eventually, she converted this into a full fledged Italian restaurant where you can explore the paintings and buy them as well along with the best of what Italy has to offer in gastronomy. So let me offer my insights on the enchanting dishes offered here :

Focaccia: The taste of warm and freshly baked focaccia in winters is enough for a person to go into food coma. And the ones baked by Café Amaretto is worth mentioning. The bread is warm, soft from the inside and slightly crispy from the outside with the subtle flavours of fresh garlic, thyme, bell peppers and red jalapeno prominent in it.

Bruschetta platter: The platter showcases caponata, yellow bell pepper and tomato feta cheese bruschetta sprayed with white sesame and is one of the best I have ever tasted. The tomato and feta cheese one is the finest among the three – with the fresh dainty juliennes of tomato and soft and salty feta cheese over a thin toast. The caponata bruschetta has finely chopped onions and eggplant with sweetness dominating it. The yellow bell pepper one is well balanced and soft.

Pan fried prawns with garlic chips: Finally there is a place where the prawns are not smelly enough to destroy your appetite. The pan fried prawns are kept over thin slices of orange and topped with lemon butter sauce and garlic chips. The prawns are well cooked, soft and chewy. The presence of orange slices gives the dish a slightly sweet flavour in addition to the subtle tanginess of the sauce. The garlic chips are fried though not deep fried thus retaining the pungency and the added caramelized flavour.

Tomato Basil Soup: We really need to move over the ready to make tomato soups, because hey, they are laden with preservatives and not good for health at all! And the flavours are not captured well in them. The one presented here is freshly prepared and will make you yearn for it, especially since the winters are here. The consistency of the soup is thick and the presence of chopped garlic and basil leaves provide some bitterness to an otherwise sweet and tangy soup. This one is served with buttered toast.

Mushroom salad: These days, chefs are experimenting with mushrooms quite frequently and yes, we are not complaining at all! The salad here is made with fresh and juicy button mushrooms which are finely sliced and mixed well with peanuts, garlic chips and rice puffs. Myriad flavours live in this salad: sweetness and tanginess due to the sauce and onions, crunchiness because of peanuts and rice puffs and chewiness because of mushrooms. The thin slices of garlic chips provide the extra pungency to an already rich salad.

Ravioli with tomato bread filling in lemon butter sauce: Of all the raviolis I have had, this has to be the most exquisite one. The ravioli is soft and freshly made and is filled with a fresh and fine mixture of tomato and bread. The ravioli is literally melt in the mouth. And the sauce accompanying it makes it that way. The sauce is subtly tangy and creamy and complements the ravioli well.

Spinach and Ricotta crepes: The crepes are mushy and creamy from the inside and flaky from the outside with a very fine mixture of spinach and ricotta cheese. The sauce is tomato based and is freshly made with the balance of creaminess, tanginess and sweetness. The presence of walnuts provides an extra crunchiness to an otherwise melt in the mouth dish.

Chicken with black pepper and mushroom sauce: The chicken is extremely soft and flavourful with the sauce slightly spicy and bitter. The chicken is served with juicy and chewy mushrooms and crispy zucchini chips.

Ricotta cheesecake with strawberry sauce: The cheesecake is soft but firm, and the saltiness, tanginess and sweetness in it are finely balanced.

Salted caramel: Served on a biscuit base, the cream has prominently salty and slightly sweet.

Tiramisu: It tasted quite bitter to me though it was heavenly soft.
