Drinksbreak, Model Town 2, New Delhi

If ever there was an outlet which hustled and bustled with customers even in the middle of the day on a scorching day in Delhi, it is Drinksbreak. Students and adults alike were thronging this place while I was busy deciding what to binge on and what to leave. At the end of a 15 minutes deep thinking activity, I zeroed in on the following:

Blueberry Waffles: A crunchy waffle topped with a smooth cream and fresh blueberry syrup – can we ask for more? The waffle was moderately sweet, not too chewy, the cream had fine consistency and texture and the presence of real blueberries in the syrup made our day. It could have been slightly lighter though. RECOMMENDED.

Strawberry Waffles: Very similar to the blueberry waffles with real strawberries in the syrup – strawberry lovers, you finally have some nice waffles to look forward to. RECOMMENDED.

Watermelon mojito: The freshness of lemon and mint leaves combined with the slight sweetness of watermelon and the extra punch of soda – we definitely have a winner here. I was able to wash down those decadent waffles with this one. RECOMMENDED.

Pizza fries: When the goodness of the pizza topping is coupled with the crispiness of the French fries – our next snack item is ready. The presence of warm runny cheese with black olives, chopped green capsicum and sweet corn kernels will make you feel nostalgic about your humble vegetarian pizza. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Loaded Nachos: If only ever other outlet prepared nachos in such a way, because these nachos are actually loaded with cheese, bell peppers, olives and sweet corn kernels in addition to a spicy mixture of onion and garlic. The next sought after snack item? Why not? HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The outlet is a takeaway joint and you have to stand in a constricted space if you want to eat there, but no complaints because of the wonderful dishes served here. The staff is hard working, considering how crowded it gets in the evening.

Recommendation: Steel cutlery because it is difficult to cut a heavy waffle with a plastic fork and knife.

The Junction, Hauz Khas, New Delhi

This new property in Delhi is actually a junction of multiple cuisine trains. Spread across a huge area with different sections, this one boasts of a distinct sushi and dimsums bar, The Big Baker with a lovely assortment of desserts, a pizzeria, an outdoor seating area under the shade of trees (full marks for that) and indoor fine dine area. The Junction redefines the word multi-cuisine for you by serving multiple cuisines from all the courses. Here are a few of them that I recently tasted:

Veg pizza: The thinnest crust with a lovely succulency and the chewiness and juiciness of yellow and green zucchinis should not be missed. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20170327_164309-01

Chicken dimsums: The exceptionally thin exterior is attractive but the extremely tangy flavour of the mine chicken mince is not acceptable.

IMG_20170327_170612-01

Mushroom wantons: I usually avoid wantons because they are deep fried but I could not keep my hands off this one. The finely chopped mushrooms were enveloped in a chewy exterior whichw as fried to crispy perfection. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20170327_171700-01

California roll: Their sushis are a must try and this one was a burst of subtle flavours – sweet, tangy and piquant. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20170327_164548-01

Mac n cheese: Ahh, the gooey cheese works its magic again! The al dante macaroni drenched in warm parmesan with bits of chicken is one dish which you would not want to miss! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20170327_170118-01

Veg mezze platter: I have never ever tasted a mezze platter like this one! For the first time, the pita breads were slathered with butter and were soft yet crispy – the characteristic brittleness was absent here. Additionally, the beetroot flavoured dip was ohh-so-delicious! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Prawn dimsums: If you leave the intense watery aroma of prawns aside, the these dimsums are heavenly! The skin and the filling are perfect and better than the chicken ones here.

IMG_20170327_175151-01

Chicken and cashewnut dumplings: Who could have thought that the nuttiness and crunchiness of the cashewnuts could be used to innovate the usual chicken dimsums? These guys did and it turned out excellent! And the form of these lovelies are way too attractive. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Frenzone, Satyaniketan, New Delhi

A quaint little café situated in the by lanes of Satyaniketan, Frenzone should be your go to place if you love the classic British cuisine and are also fascinated by some of the paraphernalia associated with the British pop culture.

The British influence is apparent when you enter the place. Two miniature royal guards dressed in red welcome you into a red door which is surprisingly a phone booth – Tardis from Doctor Who. The walls of the café are adorned with three dimensional plastic figurines of the famous buildings of London.

Moving on to the dishes I tried:

Lemonade: A light and breezy drink which is not overpowering, but it should have been more flavourful.

img_20170208_181609

Fish and chips: The classic British dish re-invented at this café. The fish is firm and fried so well that the crust does not peel out when you cut it. No crumbling as well when you break it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

img_20170208_182549

Chicken and coriander dimsums: A dish which could have been the hero of the evening. The combination of minced chicken and coriander is so darn flavourful that you will wonder about not having it before. However, the minced chicken is so dense and stiff that it is an arduous task to even bite into it. Also, the skin is left raw at some of the portions.

img_20170208_183005

Butterfly pasta with chicken in arrabiata sauce: There is a name for these adorable butterfly shaped pasta and these guys should call it one – farfalle. The pasta was cooked al dante and the chicken was ohh-so-delicate and succulent. The white sauce was smooth and had a good consistency with hints of rosemary and garlic. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

img_20170208_184919

Baked nachos with chicken: I shall call this dish a nacho lasagne. Because the nachos were arranged in layers with the filling of delectable minced chicken flavoured with herbs and tomatoes and topped with light gooey cheese. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Carl’s Jr., Saket, New Delhi

When it comes to mean and decadent burgers, Carl’s Jr. is the go to place for burger lovers. Within a short span of time, this burger joint has made a name for itself in the Indian market as well apart from being the conqueror of the American fast food industry. Needless to say, we can not help falling in love with their sinful preparations specially when they are launching four new flavours, especially suited to the Indian palate.

They have started a “muttonisation drive” where they are introducing four meat patty burgers with customized sauces for Indians. After devouring on their paradisiacal burgers, I can safely conclude that this drive is going to be successful.

Few fun facts about Carl’s Jr.: Their mutton patties are grilled in their own juices which makes the patty so light, chewy and juicy. Their trademark sauces are light with a medium consistency and are not too heavy. So the burger experience you get is out of the world. And their patty recipe, sauce recipe and bun recipe is patented, so the taste you get has been worked upon by professionals after thorough experimentation and research.

Technicalities aside, let us move on to the our point of discussion:

French Fries: Not your ideal and usual French fries but good. They have a light crispy exterior with soft insides but not too soft. RECOMMENDED.

Famous Star Burger: A chewy and juicy mutton patty lightly topped with a sweet sauce enclosed in soft buns will transfer you to the wonderland of heavenly burgers. The patty is made from a fine mince of mutton which is moist but not soggy. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

img_20161228_133014

Famous Onion Burger: This one is for the folks who crave the fieriness in their burgers. The patty is again chewy and juicy but in combination with sauce, it is quite hot and heavy. The patty is topped with fried onion rings which lend their sweetness and balance the hotness of the burger. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Special Tomato: Burgers with multi grain buns? Way to go Carl’s Jr. For the health freaks out there who do not wish to consume refined flour buns, this burger is made for you. The buns in this one are too an extent brittle but the patty is so meaty and flavourful with the added sweetness and hotness of sauce and sliced tomatoes. RECOMMENDED.

Special Mint: Mint sauce with mutton patty? You won’t like this combination in the first bite, but in the end, you will relish your experience. Mint sauce is pretty creamy and fresh but not too heavy. Patty is again chewy and juicy and the use of multi grain buns which are soft is commendable. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
