Viet-Nom, DLF Cyber Hub, Gurgaon

Lately, my fascination for South-East Asian cuisine has grown fourfold. The magic of dimsums, noodles, poke bowls and so on has worked its way into my heart and who am I resist when the lovely cuisine from Vietnam comes calling.

Pho Vegetables: Lovely rice noodles drenched in a hot, sweet and sour soup with the goodness of crunchy vegetables- carrots, broccoli, bok choy, mint and spinach leaves, the mellow tofu and chewy portobello & shiitake mushrooms. The bowl is served with hot and spicy Sriracha sauce, caramelised garlic & onions, and peanuts.

Pork & King Oyster Mushroom Spring Rolls: The very fine texture of the hot hot mince of pork and mushrooms is overwhelming. And with such a hot spicy mixture, it is difficult to roll into crispy spring rolls. Served with a melt in the mouth spicy peanut sauce, this ensemble is one item not to miss.

White Rose Dimsums: These are tender crystal dimsums enclosing a very delicate mixture of tapioca and mung beans which actually melts in your mouth. The sauce is sweet and spicy although the spicier part is pronounced because of finely chopped red chillies.

Viet-Nom special pizza: Slightly disappointing because the rice paper had a burnt texture and excessive use of basil leaves. But the succulent chicken chorizo and egg cheese combo saves the dish.

Avocado surprise: Surprising yet pleasant! The finely mashed avocado is drenched in coconut ice – cream and topped with maple syrup and coconut shavings. The resultant is a cool and creamy subtle dessert.

Tandoori mushrooms: Tangy and spicy mushrooms which are juicy as well.

IMG_4121-01

Dahi ke sholey: They are deep fried yes but airy and light at the same time. Not to forget the creamy insides with the balance between the sweetness of yogurt and the scovian factor of green chillies.

IMG_20190413_151624-01

Cheese Burst Soya Chaap: As if the mellowness of this soya chaap wasn’t enough, these guys dipped the same in a cheesy sauce to entice our bellies.

IMG_20190413_150703-01

Zaffraani Paneer: Paneer and assorted colourful bell peppers compliment each other in an excellent way. But when served in a hot onion based gravy and topped with carom seeds, do provide a tantalizing experience.

Nooba, DLF Cyber Hub, Gurgaon

I am slowly learning to move from Indianised versions of the global dishes and gradually falling in love with the authentic versions. Nooba provided a perfect opportunity for me to explore Schezwan cuisine fashioned from the expert hands of chefs from China.

Nooba should be recognized as a family restaurant with serene interiors. The staff is courteous and the managers know their cuisine very well. All the ingredients are imported from China so the authenticity is maintained.

Shredded Chicken: The chicken is fresh, juicy and not chewy which was a relief! The flavour is subtle and not too overpowering. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20181229_135616-01

Fried Prawn: The prawns are fried but not deep fried and topped with peppery garnish and spring onions. The prawns were a fresh catch and tender in texture. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20181229_140154-01

Asparagus in Bean Curd: Kudos to these guys for giving tofu an appealing texture. And kudos to the presentation as well! The lightly sautéed asparagus are delicately placed in crusty tofu and drenched in a light vinegar based sauce. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20181229_140210-01

Chicken & Black Mushroom Dimsums: The dainty mushrooms enclosing a very subtle mixture of finely chopped chicken mince and black mushrooms should be hogged on to even when not hungry. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20181229_143553-01

Mixed Meat Noodles in White Garlic Sauce: Wok tossed Hakka Noodles with a plethora of vegetables, lamb and chicken in a silky smooth white garlic sauce – subtlety at its best! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Chocolate Roulade: Move over brownies, the delicately rolled chocolate rolls enclosing gooey chocolate syrup and served with a scoop of cool vanilla ice-cream is the perfect way to end a delicious meal. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Fattoush Salad: It is always considered “healthy” to begin a meal with a light sweet and savoury salad. My holiday lunch began with this light salad consisting of diced zucchini, cucumber, tomatoes, crispy pita chips and pomegranate seeds in a slightly tangy sauce. RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20181109_134153-01

Hummus Rasasfour: This is a special type of hummus served with pomegranate, molasses and diced chicken. The chicken pieces are extra juicy and have well imbibed the flavours of the molasses.

IMG_20181109_134159-01

Mixed Grill Platter: A refreshing break from the regular spiced laden Tandoori platter. The Turkish Adana and lamb kebabs were very juicy, firm, tender and resembled our very own Seekh kebab, albeit subtler but hot. Shish Touk was ohh-so-luscious with the goodness of mint  and smoked to perfection with butter. Iranian Urfa chicken kebab was slightly hotter, drier and saltier. RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20181109_140133-01

Yamini Chicken Manfi Rice: I shall call this Yemenese biryani. Two humongous pieces of chicken leg and breast on a bed of spiced rice is surely my dream meal. The rice was cooked in Yemenese spices as well as our coarse ones – black cardomam, cloves and black pepper and topped with caramelised onions. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20181109_142339-01

Cheese Gunafa: I though desserts fashioned out of cheese were only the expertise of Europeans. But no, hell no, Middle Eastern cuisine also uses cheese to prepare delectable sugary bites. The cheese gunafa is warm and moderately sweet with fried vermicelli dipped in sugar syrup on top. Not to forget the finely chopped pistachios. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The Trial Box, DLF Phase 1, Gurgaon

I would have given them a 3.5 but since Zomato does not allow 0.5 ratings now, so sticking to 3. And this rating accounts for some below par dishes and a harrowing delivery experience.

The order came pretty late – one and a half hours after the stipulated time. Additionally there were no carry bags given – how am I supposed to carry loose cutlery set, dips and the meal boxes to my place? Add to this the spilling dips and sauces and you have a blunder.

Mushroom and asparagus hargao dimsums: The chewiness of freshly chopped mushrooms and the subtle crunchiness of asparagus, enclosed in warm dimsum covering will definitely entice the mushroom lovers and the vegetarians alike. The extra hot and spicy flavours are the icing on the cake.

IMG_20180913_203518-01

Mushroom crystal dumplings: Ohhhhh man, such mellowness! Add to this, the wonderful watery and chewy texture of the button, shiitake and porcini mushroom – phew! The caramelised garlic on top – win win!

IMG_20180913_203837-01

Spicy chicken dimsums: These flower shaped dimsums drenched in a sweet chilli sauce is meant foe those days when you are craving balanced flavours with a certain zing.

IMG_20180913_204152-01

Reshmi dohra kebab: Frankly speaking, I am not impressed with this one. It is important to smoke the kebabs so that they do not taste raw.

IMG_20180913_203251-01

Spinach and ricotta ravioli in white sauce: I always stress on seamlessness and this dish will definitely get full marks in the regard. Such a smooth mellow mixture of finely chopped spinach and ricotta enveloped in smooth ravioli and slathered in white sauce having the perfect consistency – neither runny nor viscous. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20180913_204550-01

Vietnamese Noodle bowl: The goodness of a semi-raw meal with a sour and spicy sauce. (Talk about red chillies). The fine glass noodles, the fresh vegetables: carrots, zucchini, asparagus, bell peppers, pokchoy and shiitake mushrooms, the crunchy peanuts and of course the perfectly grilled chicken – flavourful yet healthy. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20180913_205530-01

Butter chicken meal: A wholesome north Indian meal is what we all desire when cooking seems tedious. So when you have a warm Naan, creamy butter chicken and Dal Makhani, soothing Raita, luscious fried rice and a warm dulcet chocolate brownie, you can’t say no, next time.

Carnatic Café, Sector 15, Gurgaon

Let us please move over the likes of Sagar Ratnas, the Uddupis and the Bhawans when it comes to pure vegetarian South Indian cuisine. We, the Delhiites, the north Indians are least bit aware about the home made delicacies prepared in the Karnataka region. And that is where the sorcery of Carnatic café comes in.

Quick fact – water is served in bronze glasses here, thus reminding you of the older and simpler days. The interiors are classy and give a nostalgic feeling of the South Indian cafes of the 90’s. The servers and the manager are humble and know their cuisine well and are swift to suggest the specials.

Buttermilk: Freshly prepared and frothing gloriously to the brim, the classic and the masala buttermilk are the best way to begin an authentic South Indian meal. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20180627_185346-01

Rice Idli: Fluffy and soft idlis with a prominent sour flavour served with piping hot sambhar; onion, coconut and coriander chutney. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20180627_185554-01

Rawa coconut dosa: Loaded with desi ghee, crispy with embedded cumin and enclosing grated coconut – just how better it can get? The flavours are simple and not overpowering and when the dosa is served separately with mashed potatoes tempered in mustard seeds, onion and garlic, the taste is enhanced. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20180627_190153-01

Malleshwaram 18th cross dosa: The air becomes redolent with the aroma of pure desi ghee when this dosa is brought to you. It is not a paper thin variety but a thick, crispy and fluffy one with the insides coated with white butter and podi or gunpowder mixture. HIGHYLY RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20180627_190742-01

Bombat dosa: This one is a bomb! Thick yet crispy variety with the insides layered with white butter, cinnamon and finely powdered onion garlic mixture. You can taste the prominent hotness of the cinnamon in this one – enough to ignite a small volcano inside your mouth. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20180627_190826-01

Bisi-bele-bath: A hot maelstrom of short rice, lentils, vegetables and spices served with a crispy pappad/poppadam and crunchy boondi, this one is a complete meal in itself. RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20180627_192854-01

Onion and Tomato Uttapam: A lovely soft pancake where the tomatoes are squished, thus imparting their tangy juicy flavour to the ensemble. The only drawback is its oiliness. RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20180627_193707-01

Obatto: You will have second thoughts of tasting this after having a hearty meal. But trust me, you won’t regret a bite. The crepe is oily yet crispy and encloses finely pulverised jaggery which is moderately sweet with aromatic green cardamom. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20180627_200307-01

Home made ice-cream: I usually avoid ice creams because of my childhood over indulgence. But, each and every flavour here is prepared in house and extracted from its natural source. I happened to binge on the Ratnagiri mango one and the strawberry & rose one and both were light, subtle and out of this world. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
