Neung Roi, Radisson Blu, Delhi Airport

Before visiting Neung Roi, I did not have the faintest idea that Thai cuisine is much more than the Red, Yellow and Green curries, noodles and some dimsums here and there. Thank you to the Head Chef Orawan Piyapaisanskul for opening my eyes and introducing to me the lovely flavourful world of Thai cuisine.

Neung Roi, situated at the Radisson Blu Plaza hotel has launched its new menu with an assortment of jaw drawing dishes and here are a few of them:

Miam Khan: The traditional Thai mouth freshner – betelnut leaves enclosing crunchy peanuts, onions, grated coconut & chopped garlic drenched in freshly cooked tamarind sauce. Sweet and savoury, it does freshens the palate.

Sai Krog Moo: Sausages after such a long time! And that too the pork ones which are extra juicy and served with some shallots and a sweet and spicy dip. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Gais Louis Suan: The sheer beauty of melt in the mouth tofu is inexplicable. Specifically when it is served with crunchy bean sprouts, caramelised garlic and chilli soya sauce – sour and sweet in every morsel. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Goong Phad Prik Katiem: Such huge prawns crispy fried to golden perfection and topped with caramelised garlic & dried red chillies and served with soft boiled pokchoy leaves – heaven! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Gai Louis San: Deep fried chicken breast with oozy juices in the interiors and topped with chopped betelnut leaves, peanuts and lemongrass is a complete meal in itself. The added effect of the home made tamarind sauce works wonders here. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Kanom Beng Goong: The chef specially prepared this for us. The paper thin rice flour crepe enclosing diced prawns, tofu, onions and sprouts in a coconut flavoured sauce is refreshing to say the least. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Pook Tak: A hot, sour and bitter concoction with the goodness of prawns, chicken, calamari, basil, enoki mushrooms, lemongrass and shallots is slightly overwhelming if you are not used to the aroma of fresh seafood. The calamari and the prawns will taste raw for us but their essence in the soup is amazing. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Khao Pao Tom Yum Talay: The chef specifically stresses on the Tom Yum fried rice and after hogging onto these, I understand why. This dish is so darn flavourful – warm & spicy with the subtlety of lemongrass and soya sauce and the occasional bite of mushrooms and chicken. Explosion in every bite! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Geang Khru Gai Yang: At first look, this would seem like chicken prepared in mustard sauce. But taste this and you will know it is a tad bit different from your initial guess. The yellow curry is prepared from lemongrass, kaffir lime, garlic, coconut (of course) and black pepper and is spicy to the core. Who said Thai cuisine is bland? HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Grai Phad Prik plow: Just like our own chilli chicken albeit fewer spices. The boneless chicken pieces are so juicy and the presence of red chillies cuts down the sweetness of the ensemble. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Pla Prik: A crusty fish topped with a heavily spiced chilli sauce with the tanginess of tomatoes – why not?

Khao Niew Kheau: Before tasting this dessert, I never ever imagined that rice (in solid form) could be used in a sweet ensemble. The warm and sweet sticky rice is flavoured in pandum (that is what the attendant told us) and is green colour. It is paired with sour mangoes with the thick coconut milk on top. Sounds drooling? HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

This place has been enticing the European food lovers for the past five years in the sophisticated circles of south Delhi and we feel slightly dejected to not know of such an exquisite place. The intricate interiors and the classic Spanish and French music playing in the background remind you of those Victorian movies set in the 1920’s.

Chef Bhagiratha, the executive chef of this restaurant is an experienced and talented chef and his touch is evident in the dearth and the complexity of the dishes available in the menu. All the ingredients are imported or sourced from quality sellers and the all the sauces are unprocessed. As he says, “We believe in serving the freshest sauces and dips.”

Crispy tobasco zucchini chips with spicy dip: Thick slices of zucchini crumb fried and presented to you with in house tomato sauce – such novelty! The juicy zucchini chip blended so well with the crisp exterior and add to it the tangy and spicy sauce – short of words we are!

Southern fried mushrooms with chilli garlic mayo: Half portion of a mushroom crumb fried with a lovely crisp perfection with least brittleness and topped with a warm dip of white and yellow cheddar cheese, jalapenos and chilli flakes. The mushroom was surprisingly mellow and the tangy and creamy sauce blew away a portion of our minds.

Bacon wrapped chicken sausages with mustard mayo: One of the finest sausages which retained their firmness yet were tender and not chewy. The bacon – perfection is the word. It was not too chewy and did not choke your food pipe like the ones you encounter these days. The smoked crunch on the latter was the extra love.

Tempura shrimp wasabi mayo: How come Chef Bhagirath is able to conjure such a thin, seamless crispy fired layer over his appetizers? This one was no different with the no brittleness and well cooked shrimps which weren’t stinking at all.

Ratatouille Nicoise with saffron pilaf: The best one I have had till date. Smoked and grilled slices of aubergine, bell peppers, tomatoes and zucchini topped with a freshly prepared thick pesto sauce and cheddar shavings on a bed of the ratatouille sauce served with blossoming long grained aromatic rice. The ratatouille sauce is again freshly prepared and slight sweet and slightly tangy.

Spinach and Ricotta ravioli in rose sauce: Melt in the mouth ravioli filled with a generous amount of finely chopped spinach and ricotta and drenched in a lovely rose sauce fashioned from red sauce mixed with butter and cream. The sauce has an adorable creamy texture but is not too heavy.

Pan roasted tenderloin steak in three peppercorn sauce: The best tenderloin I have had till date: I was actually able to tear away the chewy chunks with a fork and knife. The tenderloin was doused in a thick sweet sauce and you could actually bite peppercorns within those chewy chunks. The smoked vegetables, especially asparagus were done so well that you actually wonder whether they are cooked or not. The flat potato chips were one of the finest and were prepared by pressing the boiled potatoes and frying them.

German pork sausage: I am amazed with the supreme quality of their sausages: firm but not too chewy with the additional finesse of the minced meat. The mashed potatoes had a smooth and silky texture.

Melting chocolate cake with fruit salsa: A thin chocolate shell including the warm melting chocolate which had an excellent runny texture served with chopped apples and pomegranate. Not too heavy on the stomach and the palate.

While I loved my brief stay at the Ibis hotel near Mumbair airport, I cherished my culinary experiences at their in house restaurant Spice it. I was flabbergasted by their expensive buffet setup – you name the dish or the item and they make it. Here are a few of them:

Omelette : Saltless. But as the chef told me that their majority clientele are Asians and they prefer their omelettes sans salt. So overall a good one.

Sweet corn and peas: The sweet corn kernels and the pea grains boiled well and served to you – an absolute healthy side to your usual breakfast.

Chicken sausage: Where to start? Chewy exterior, juicy interior and slightly peppery – I devoured tons of these.

Pork Sausage: The adjectives “chewy” and “juicy” will pre repeated here though they were slightly chewier than the chicken ones – the way they should be.

Potato wedges: These are there to satisfy your carbohydrate needs – crusty skin with soft inside and laden with red chillies.

Masala Anda: A Marathi one I shall say. Boiled eggs lathered in a rich spice mixture which is hot as well.

Marathi thali: I do not remember the names of the individual items but the dessert in the form of “lauki ki kheer” (bottlegourd pudding) was a novelty. The whole ensemble was fashioned by the Sous Chef Mr. Sunil Satpatte and he specially dished out this thali for me so that I can get some authentic Marathi experience in my food journey. And needless to say, I loved the lavish thali but could not eat all the items due to subsequent travel plans.

“Nostalgia is a bitch”

Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries rightly mentions nostalgia as someone quite annoying or reminding you of something/someone painful.

How about a place, a fine dining brewery which makes you nostalgic and in a good way? Where you can see and listen to retro songs, relish the posters of numerous rock bands, your favourite cartoons and comic strips? Head to the The Clock Tower situated at the Golf Course road.

The place is hugely huge. Forgive the grammatical error, but I could not call it grandiloquent because it is not grand, it is huge and so immersed in the pop culture paraphernalia. From the posters of Black Sabbath and AC/DC to the common man cartoons by R.K. Laxman, from the comic strips of Archies to a huge screen playing Dancing Queen by Abba, they have it all. Since I am a huge fan of rock, metal and retro music and the old world comics, I thoroughly enjoyed soaking in all this place has to offer.

Here are a few dishes that I relished :

Non Veg Mezze platter : This has to be the best non veg Mezze platter I have ever tasted. It has the softest pita bread which not too soft so as to disintegrate, soft and chewy lam kibbeh which are ooh-so-delicious with cashews in their cores, finest hummus with hints of garlic, tzaziki with the perfect sour cream and sweet caramelize onions and lovely baba ganoush with the blossoming flavours of garlic and egg plant. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Chilli Chicken : These were spicy to the core, thin crusted, soft and chewy.

Dahi ke kebab : Not recommended at all. The yoghurt was not smooth and was disintegrating. The taste was too sweet with not the right balance of flavours.

Pan seared basa : A huge fillet of basa topped with lemon garlic sauce and fresh parsley, on a bed of mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables, this could have been better. The basa was seared but was disintegrating to small pieces and hence difficult to eat. The mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables were fine.

Notorious bangers and mash : Wow and yum are the words! Pork sausages in the usual shape as well as in snail shape on a bed of mashed potatoes and boiled peas were heavenly. I never ever had a better sausage till date. The sausages were chewy, finely minced and delicately falvoured. The covering was firm and had not dissolved.

Non veg mughlai platter : Pretty average. The chicken pieces were dry and the seekh kebabs were way too chewy.
