Lately, my fascination for South-East Asian cuisine has grown fourfold. The magic of dimsums, noodles, poke bowls and so on has worked its way into my heart and who am I resist when the lovely cuisine from Vietnam comes calling.
Pho Vegetables: Lovely rice noodles drenched in a hot, sweet and sour soup with the goodness of crunchy vegetables- carrots, broccoli, bok choy, mint and spinach leaves, the mellow tofu and chewy portobello & shiitake mushrooms. The bowl is served with hot and spicy Sriracha sauce, caramelised garlic & onions, and peanuts.
Pork & King Oyster Mushroom Spring Rolls: The very fine texture of the hot hot mince of pork and mushrooms is overwhelming. And with such a hot spicy mixture, it is difficult to roll into crispy spring rolls. Served with a melt in the mouth spicy peanut sauce, this ensemble is one item not to miss.
White Rose Dimsums: These are tender crystal dimsums enclosing a very delicate mixture of tapioca and mung beans which actually melts in your mouth. The sauce is sweet and spicy although the spicier part is pronounced because of finely chopped red chillies.
Viet-Nom special pizza: Slightly disappointing because the rice paper had a burnt texture and excessive use of basil leaves. But the succulent chicken chorizo and egg cheese combo saves the dish.
Avocado surprise: Surprising yet pleasant! The finely mashed avocado is drenched in coconut ice – cream and topped with maple syrup and coconut shavings. The resultant is a cool and creamy subtle dessert.
So finally there is a café in Gurgaon which is located in the premium location of Golf Course Road and which is not a water hole unlike the proliferating restaurants here.
Forestta deserves a special mention for being a place where you can sit quietly with your friends and family, enjoy their collection of best selling books, play snooker or relish Karoake on Thursday nights. It is a no go place for alcohol lovers and kid friendly too.
Wooden interiors and vibrant ambience with a touch of greenery welcome you as you sail aboard this place. The menu is varied and is optimally priced. Here are a few items that I recently binged upon:
Mango Smoothie: Made from real alphonso mangoes with no added flavours, this one is a must try for smoothie lovers.
Veg kebab platter: A well grilled paneer tikka, crispy tandoori broccoli drenched in spices, juicy mushrooms and mellow poatatoes filled with a peppery filling – vegetarians, you have a profound reason to visit this place.
Non veg platter: Fish Tikka which does not disintegrate easily and is soft to the core, mouth gasmic chicken tikka which is extra mellow, firm yet juicy mutton seekh kebab and spicy and tangy tandoori chicken – it is difficult to stop yourselves if you are a hardcore non vegetarian.
Afghani Tandoori momos: As of the usual Tandoori momos were not enough! With a chewy exterior and mushy interiors slathered in a sticky creamy sauce, you are bound to get surprise.
Vegetarian spring rolls: A defined crunch sounds awakens your senses as you bite into this blissful piece of sheer culinary magic.
Food innovation is the current trend in the food industry and restaurants experimenting with fusion food are sure to attract customers time and again. Because combination dishes invite a loyal fan following and I am one of those people who love to explore new cuisines, even the blend of two or more.
The Chatter House has earned a fine reputation for experimenting with dishes and boy, they have succeeded in changing our palette preferences. Who could say no their Blue Cheese Naan or Port Wine with chocolate syrup?
For our Rock n Roll fans, this is the perfect place with the framed posters of The Beatles, Def Leppard, The Eagles and what not with a rivalling playlist is sure to seduce you.
Butter Chicken Spring Roll: Fusion food at its best! Who could have thought of combining the staple curry of Delhiites with the famed Oriental snack item? The spring roll has a light and flaky exterior with tender chicken pieces inside. The chicken is slightly drizzled with the smooth and creamy butter chicken gravy which is served separately and you have to dip your spring roll in the curry to enjoy this mouth watering decadence. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Garden in a bowl: Fresh vegetables – black olives, carrots, broccoli and cherry tomatoes along with roasted almonds served in a tangy and creamy yoghurt and eggplant based dressing and garnished with smoked olive dust – healthy as well as light. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Blue cheese Naan: This dish has been the most talked about snack item since the inception of this place. The chewy naan is redolent with the pungent flavour of blue cheese and chopped pineapple are adorned on its top so as to cut the sharpness of the cheese. Served with our very own Dal makhni which is ohh-so-creamy and we have a winner here. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Bacon Wrap Mac n Cheese: Why in the name of heaven did I binge on it? Because I can not stop craving it. The melt-in-the-mouth macaroni drenched in creamy and cheesy sauce and wrapped in a bacon strip which is smoked to perfection – bacon is crispy but not chewy and the mac n cheese is not too cheesy. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Mushroom Risotto: Subtlety defines this – smooth and not so creamy texture of the mushroom sauce with a topping of cherry tomatoes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Fettucine Fungi De Basco: Their fettucine is prepared in house and when combined in the creamy white wine based sauce with the addition of mushroom ragout – we could not keep our hands off! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
So after a long time, we got to experience South Asian/Oriental dishes a few days back and we were pretty impressed with the delivery service of Wok Me. The order came at 7:50pm, 10 minutes before our designated time. How often does that happen?
Neatly packaged in paper boxes with no spill overs, these were the items that we tasted:
Chicken Lemongrass Sio Mai Dimsums: You know the dimsums are unusual when they are adorned with caramelised garlic on top. The thick, sticky, translucent and soft skin enclosing finely minced chicken with lemongrass surely tastes like heaven. The fresh flavour provided by lemongrass is the USP of this dish. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Yum Yum Rolls: True to their names, these vegetarian spring rolls were yummy to the core! The crunchy and flaky exterior and the soft juicy interior consisting of finely julienned cabbage and carrots can inflame your palette. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Make your own Wok Box – Flat Rice noodles in spicy coconut curry: The appearance of these noodles would not entice you since the curry had dried up by the time the order reached us, but the flavours will. The noodles are healthy as they are fashioned from rice and have a velvety smooth texture. The aroma and taste of the coconut gravy is tantalising to your taste buds and the addition of carrot juliennes, cottage cheese cubes, baby corn and shiitake mushrooms makes this a complete meal. The topping of peanuts and sesame seeds is so mouth watering! RECOMMENDED.
Recommendations: The noodles were slightly dry. They could have been moister.
Unplugged Courtyard recently launched their Monsoon menu and things couldn’t get any better!! The restaurant is a perfect place to dine out and has an impressive ambience.
Here are the dishes that I tried-
Chennai Express Cutlet – This one is made with rice and has a south indian flavour to it. Crunchy to the core.
Multi grain coated deep fried chicken fillet- As the whole world is getting obsessed with multigrains so why not coat chicken in it? An ingenious idea which is executed perfectly. It is crunchy as well as tangy.
Mexican Spring Roll – For all the people who can’t get enough of Spring Rolls, this one is divine. The sweet chilli sauce with which it is served takes it on a whole new level. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Banana Chicken – This one is grilled to perfection and is oh so juicy and tender at the same time. The flavours are bang on. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Kurkure Seekh kebab – The deep fried crunchy outer covering which encloses a soft chewy kebab is a different take on the traditional seekh kebab. It is spicy as well which makes it a winner for me. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
