Iamwaffle, Baani Square, Sector 50, Gurgaon

Who the hell I am to not listen to those delicious calls from waffles now and then? Last week I finally decided to stop drooling over the picture perfect waffles and start binging on them. And Iamwaffle, newly opened in the Baani Square came calling.
It is a small outlet spread on two floors and can hardly seat ten customers at once. The ambience is cozy and warm and the aroma of freshly baked waffles is enough to seduce your palate. Here are the two items that I savoured last week
Nutella waffle sandwich: Finally my chance to have the most decadent variety of waffles – the nutella based one. With a refreshing filling of chopped pineapple, strawberries and sliced bananas garnished with almond flakes – the waffles are moderately sweet, crunchy yet soft. RECOMMENDED.

Cheeky Monkey Shake: I was in dire need of a sugar rush and this milk and chocolate based shake with a Ferraro Rocher on the top came handy. Subtle sweetness and rich consistency make this highly recommended.

Being Chef, Sector 14, Gurgaon

So what happens when a few friends who never had any cooking experience, decide to cook a decent meal after celebrating Friday to it umpteenth? Disaster.  And what happens when an idea is born in these mechanical engineers to devise a way to make the life easy for office goers who do not have time to cook? Being Chef.

Being Chef was the first start up in India to come up with ready to eat cooking kits with 5 minute recipes. Their process is well researched, designed and patented.

I recently savoured an opportunity to taste their delicacies and try my hands on their cooking kit:

Penne pasta in white sauce cooking kit: I have laid my hands on such cooking kits before, but this one is extremely lucid and precise – one of the many reasons that it is patented. Every ingredient is measured precisely and packed with single letters written on the top. The recipe card clearly mentions the exact time a step will take for an ingredient to get cooked – the ingredients are mentioned by their corresponding letter names.

IMG_20170718_201308-01

Since they follow a 5 minute recipe procedure, the pasta was boiled, the vegetables blanched and the sauce was already prepared and packed. The quantity served for the price is well worth the money you pay. Totally impressed!

IMG_20170718_202638-01

The pasta turned out to be deliciously drool worthy since I followed the steps to the T. The balance of the flavours, the creaminess of the sauce and the extra cheese gratings on the top made my day. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20170718_204411-01

Vegetarian Deluxe Meal: Now that is one platter! You know are having a great dinner when the soft lachha paranthas are gobbled up with a smooth creamy dal makhani, a sweet paneer lababdar, a healthy bowl of mixed vegetables, simple steamed rice, a mellow gulab jamun and a well prepared mint raita.  However the mixed vegetables were quite tangy and the rice was slightly undercooked.  RECOMMENDED.

IMG_20170718_204029-01

Veg Hakka Noodles: I am very stringent when it comes to the simple yet delicious Hakka noodles and these guys passed my test. The noodles strings could have been thinner but were otherwise pretty appetizing. The finely cut jullienes of carrots, cabbage and bell peppers complimented the noodles and the subtle tanginess of vinegar was the icing on the cake. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Arsalan, Park Circus area, Kolkata

In a world of Lucknawi and the Hyderabadi, Kolkata biryani has a place of its own but sadly it has not been able to carve the same niche like the former two. India is the melting pot of cultures and biryani is a dish associated with so many states and regions. But we are aware about just the two of them.

img_20170120_222427

So if you are visiting Kolkata, you have to try the delectable biryani offered by Arsalan. The taste is so different and out of the world. And the copious quantities of the biryani accompanied with the sweet Bengali hospitality will leave you over satisfied. So here are the two dishes which I relished on my recent visit to Kolkata:

Mutton biryani: After the Lucknawi biryani from Dastarkhwan, this has to be the best regional biryani I have tasted. Contrary to the popular notion of biryani being heavily loaded with spices, this one was plain white colour with mutton pieces subtly drenched in spices. The rice was long grained basmati, aromatic, moist and blossoming. The mutton pieces were ohh-so-succulent and chewy in taste. The prominent hotness of green and black cardamom was pronounced but not too many spices were used here. The addition of boiled potatoes provided a sweet hint in an otherwise hot dish. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

img_20170120_223334

Phirni: How did the Bengalis come up with such a condensed version of phirni? Because the phirni here is not our milk and rice pudding. The khoya – concentrated milk is condensed more with green cardomam and presented in a semi-frozen form in an earthen ware. The light sweetness, the heavenly creaminess and the subtle smoothness make this dessert a masterpiece. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Madhuban, Cross Point Mall, DLF phase 4, Gurgaon

Picture a setting where you can are enchanted by the aroma of incense and soothed by the calm ambience. Now imagine this place serving delectable vegetarian dishes sans onions and garlic. Will you pay a visit to this venue? I will, despite being a hard core non vegetarian.

Madhuban, a sattvic south Indian chain of restaurants has opened its gates to Gurgaon and we finally have a place to explore when we are on strict vegetarian diet. The USP of this outlet lies in its usage of fresh ingredients and home made ghee and pickles. And since this is an Andhra based chain, expect some fireworks when you eat.

Proceeding towards the dishes I tasted:

Poddi Idli: Soft idlis coated in ghee and gunpowder. The gunpowder masala is freshly prepared so the whole ensemble is a bit spicy. The consistency of the accompanying sambhar is perfect – not too runny with well cooked vegetables. There are four types of chutneys served with idlis : peanut based which is hot; tamarind based which is tangy and spicy and tomato based which is a bit sweet due to jaggery. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

img_20170104_124424

Pesarattu: A thin and soft dosa made out of moong dal and served with warm upma is a perfect breakfast. The pesarattu is slightly salty but has the richness of coriander and moong dal grounded into a fine paste. The upma is good and the presence of curry leaves and rai seeds make it pretty authentic. This is served with a ginger chutney which is a bit sweet (jaggery) and pungent.  RECOMMENDED.

img_20170104_124645

Semiyan Payesam: Move on over your slow cooked thick semiyan, because payesam semiyan is a light and delightful dessert. The vermicelli is just boiled and not ghee roasted and served in cold milk which is not cooked. RECOMMENDED.

img_20170104_125837

Idiyappam: My favourite. So instead of the fried form, I ate the boiled one and I relished it. The rice noodles are steamed to perfection and formed in perfect roundels and served with spicy vegetable korma and fresh coconut oil and milk. The korma is fiery hot concocted out of tomatoes and ginger and the coconut milk is oh-so-sweet and light. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

img_20170104_130642

Bissi bhele bhaat: Finally savoured the most talked about dish of Karnataka. A strong whiff of desi ghee accompanies the bhaat and when you behold it, the copious amounts used will entice you. The maelstrom of varied flavours : tanginess and spiciness accompanied with the richness of ghee, the nutty chewiness of peanuts and the pungency of rai seeds will leave you wanting for more. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

img_20170104_132108

Cheese Dosa rolls: A fusion dish in their breakfast menu, this is worth trying. The presence of raw bell peppers compliments the crunchiness of the dosa. And the cheese, oh boy! The gooey cheese viscously pouring out of the dosa is overwhelming. But it is pretty salty – extra salt from cheese. RECOMMENDED.

Café Amaretto, South Point Mall, Golf Course Road, Gurgaon

Nestled in a niche corner of the South Point Mall, this dainty little café should be on your list if you want to experience authentic fine dine style Italian cuisine with beautiful art paraphernalia adorning the walls of the place. Welcome to Café Amaretto, an elegant yet classy place with a touch of artsy grace.

The place is done up in soothing white interiors reminding you of the typical Italian restaurants and in the evening, this café is lit up in romantic lights, thus amplifying the ambience.

Shayal Taunk, the owner of this lovely place, is an enthusiastic young entrepreneur with a taste of the Italian way of life. She started this café as an art gallery but eventually, she converted this into a full fledged Italian restaurant where you can explore the paintings and buy them as well along with the best of what Italy has to offer in gastronomy. So let me offer my insights on the enchanting dishes offered here :

Focaccia: The taste of warm and freshly baked focaccia in winters is enough for a person to go into food coma. And the ones baked by Café Amaretto is worth mentioning. The bread is warm, soft from the inside and slightly crispy from the outside with the subtle flavours of fresh garlic, thyme, bell peppers and red jalapeno prominent in it.

img_20161207_131415

Bruschetta platter: The platter showcases caponata, yellow bell pepper and tomato feta cheese bruschetta sprayed with white sesame and is one of the best I have ever tasted. The tomato and feta cheese one is the finest among the three – with the fresh dainty juliennes of tomato and soft and salty feta cheese over a thin toast. The caponata bruschetta has finely chopped onions and eggplant with sweetness dominating it. The yellow bell pepper one is well balanced and soft.

img_20161207_131829

Pan fried prawns with garlic chips: Finally there is a place where the prawns are not smelly enough to destroy your appetite. The pan fried prawns are kept over thin slices of orange and topped with lemon butter sauce and garlic chips. The prawns are well cooked, soft and chewy. The presence of orange slices gives the dish a slightly sweet flavour in addition to the subtle tanginess of the sauce. The garlic chips are fried though not deep fried thus retaining the pungency and the added caramelized flavour.

img_20161207_132557

Tomato Basil Soup: We really need to move over the ready to make tomato soups, because hey, they are laden with preservatives and not good for health at all! And the flavours are not captured well in them. The one presented here is freshly prepared and will make you yearn for it, especially since the winters are here. The consistency of the soup is thick and the presence of chopped garlic and basil leaves provide some bitterness to an otherwise sweet and tangy soup. This one is served with buttered toast.

img_20161207_133629

Mushroom salad: These days, chefs are experimenting with mushrooms quite frequently and yes, we are not complaining at all! The salad here is made with fresh and juicy button mushrooms which are finely sliced and mixed well with peanuts, garlic chips and rice puffs. Myriad flavours live in this salad: sweetness and tanginess due to the sauce and onions, crunchiness because of peanuts and rice puffs and chewiness because of mushrooms. The thin slices of garlic chips provide the extra pungency to an already rich salad.

img_20161207_134438

Ravioli with tomato bread filling in lemon butter sauce: Of all the raviolis I have had, this has to be the most exquisite one. The ravioli is soft and freshly made and is filled with a fresh and fine mixture of tomato and bread. The ravioli is literally melt in the mouth. And the sauce accompanying it makes it that way. The sauce is subtly tangy and creamy and complements the ravioli well.

img_20161207_135337

Spinach and Ricotta crepes: The crepes are mushy and creamy from the inside and flaky from the outside with a very fine mixture of spinach and ricotta cheese. The sauce is tomato based and is freshly made with the balance of creaminess, tanginess and sweetness. The presence of walnuts provides an extra crunchiness to an otherwise melt in the mouth dish.

img_20161207_141447

Chicken with black pepper and mushroom sauce: The chicken is extremely soft and flavourful with the sauce slightly spicy and bitter. The chicken is served with juicy and chewy mushrooms and crispy zucchini chips.

img_20161207_141535

Ricotta cheesecake with strawberry sauce: The cheesecake is soft but firm, and the saltiness, tanginess and sweetness in it are finely balanced.

Salted caramel: Served on a biscuit base, the cream has prominently salty and slightly sweet.

Tiramisu: It tasted quite bitter to me though it was heavenly soft.

Caterspoint, DLF phase 3, Gurgaon

Move over Fresh Menu, because Caterspoint is here! Why am I comparing this place to Fresh Mneu, which has already carved a niche of its own in Delhi/NCR? Because the diversity of dishes offered here can give a tough competition to Fresh Menu.

Just one look at the site, and you are baffled. Because these guys offer all day breakfast, fresh juices and smoothies, salads, pasta, calorie counted meals, desserts and heavenly shakes. And the prices are pretty optimal considering the quantity.

But I am pretty disappointed with the packaging. They sent me heavy smoothie and dessert jars in a light paper bag which was not sturdy enough to handle the load. Anyway, moving on to the food, let me share my food gasmic journey :

Khatti meethi bhel puri : A perfect evening time snack for the tea lovers! With the right blend of puffed rice, spiced peanuts and dal moth, this bhel puri is as good as the rustic road side one. RECOMMENDED.

img_20161207_185258

Smoky Chicken Jalapeno Sandwich : A healthy alternative to our comfort food, this one is made from multi grain bread which is not too thick. The filling is made up of fresh and thin lettuce, finely sliced jalapenos, juliennes of red bell peppers and cucumber and dollops of smoked juicy chicken pieces in the melted cheese and mustard sauce. RECOMMENDED.

img_20161207_190233

Vietnamese grilled chicken salad : A colourful salad with an equal dearth of flavours, this is a must try. The freshness of lettuce, the juiciness and tanginess of cherry tomatoes, black olives and jalapenos, the necessary crunchiness of lightly blanched broccoli and the spiciness of the juicy chicken will surely make your day. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

img_20161207_191410

Creamy cheesy chicken penne : Delhi is blossoming with outlets serving pasta. So why would I recommend Caterspoint? Because the creamy penne cooked by them is a class apart dish. With the prominence of fresh cream instead of cheese, the subtle sourness is pretty prominent here. The well boiled pasta is drenched in this food gasmic creamy sauce along with fresh black olives, bell peppers, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes and parsley. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

img_20161207_204007

Exotic fruit custard : This was good and passable. The creamy custard was moderately sweetened and had fresh pomegranate, plum and apple slices.

img_20161207_210632

Apple Blueberry porridge : I wish I could have this porridge everyday. It was topped with fine apple slices, almonds, blueberry and had strawberry jam at the bottom. When you mix the layers, you get a very fine dessert with myriad flavours. The typical sweetness of strawberries, the creaminess of thick milk and the freshness of the fruits make this a masterpiece. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

img_20161207_210653

Wild Blueberry Shake : Another shake to give you the healthy sugar rush. The shake is thick and well blended with bananas and blueberries. The moderate sweetness of the fruits and the pink colour is pretty attractive. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

img_20161207_191331

Cold brew coffee : I am not a coffee lover but I liked this one. The flavour of coffee was subtle here and the low fat sweetened milk had a good consistency.

img_20161207_191306

I could have given them a 4.5, but because of packaging issue, I lowered the rating to 4. I really hope they improve.

Dezertfox, Greater Kailash -1, New Delhi

Dessert lovers from the Delhi NCR region are in for a roll! Because finally there is a place which serves the most eye pleasing and delectable sugary savouries, presented in a fine dine style but optimally priced. No jokes when I write about food because Dezertfox is real!

I shall call it the Disneyland of desserts because their creations are full of fantasy and out of the world. The head pastry chef Niscar Noorullah has done a plethora of innovations while designing the menu. Infact, some of the items are gluten free and flourless. So here are some of them that I tasted :

Berry Yoghurt Smoothie : A healthy smoothie made with fresh yoghurt and filled with strawberries and black currant. It was light to drink and not too sweet. However the amount of ice can be reduced here.

img_20161113_153518

Hazelnut dome with caramel and hazelnut crisp with hazelnut mousse : A lovely dome made out of hazelnut flavoured chocolate topped with hazelnut and caramel crisp and surrounded by hazelnut mousse is tantalizing to the taste buds. The mousse is a bit bitter but has a fine texture. The crisps or the meringues just break in your mouth with the slightest hit. RECOMMENDED.

img_20161113_152754

Passion fruit framboise : A colourful and a subtle dessert, it has the dominant flavours of passion fruit and raspberry. Slightly tangy and delicately sweet, this dessert has a soft sponge and a light, airy feel to it. RECOMMENDED.

img_20161113_152932

Philadelphia Cheese Cake : This is the gluten free dessert that I mentioned before. It has a flourless cake at the bottom and has a prominent tangy sweet flavour of orange and lemon due to the use of zests of these fruits. The cheesecake has a smooth texture and is subtly sweet in taste. RECOMMENDED.

img_20161113_152727

Pistachio and fig cake : Vividly coloured in green and having a soft sponge, this cake will win the hearts of those who love pistachios. The cake has minimal sweetness and the lovely flavour of pistachio is to die for. RECOMMENDED.

img_20161113_155056

Chocolate sin : A very fine way to make a dessert having myriad flavours. The dessert consists of an intricate cylinder of chocolate which is filled with chocolate and cream ganache and wrapped in a chocolate crepe. The chocolate cylinder is oh-so-smooth with the finest ganache. Again the sweetness is subtle here. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

img_20161113_153258

Eclairs – Rose and raspberry : I love the flavour of rose and if it is used in an éclair, then I can never stop myself from having more. The éclair is super soft and sweet and has the decadent flavour of rose and raspberry in the filled mousse, which in my opinion is a pretty good combination. A sheet made of chocolate, rose and raspberry tops the éclair and make it even prettier and tastier. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

img_20161113_154652

Green tea mousse with pineapple compote with pistachio lemon cake : A very different take on a dessert – combining the bitterness of green tea with the sweetness of mousse. The mousse is perfectly smooth in texture and soft in taste. Recommended if you like green tea.

img_20161113_152835

Red Velvet Tiramisu Bon Bon : A pink coloured, dark chocolate shell containing tiramisu should be called as the king of desserts. It is beautiful to look and sometimes, you feel bad for breaking the shell. But once you taste the inside of the shell, you will be flabbergasted to the core. Because the flood of diverse flavours of coffee, dark chocolate, cream and strawberries will give you a major sugar rush. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

img_20161113_152802

Coriander passion curd tart : A chocolate shell topped with meringue crisps, this is again a subtle dessert with the sourness of passionfruit dominating it.

img_20161113_153756

Rose cupcake : The prettiest dessert after the Tiramisu Bon Bon. I ate the whole cup cake with no complaints. The cupcake is topped with rose flavoured cream which is subtly flavoured and has a heavenly smooth texture. To top my madness, the sponge was flavoured with rose, yes, no vanilla, just plain rose. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
