With the advent of modern age, processed food items are a regular thing now. Majority of us aren’t even aware that the myriad sort of allergies and diseases cropping up these days are a combined result of processed food and all the toxins that we are slowly absorbing into our system.

Hale and Heart is a very different concept cafe started by Shivani and Mani. They want to spread awareness about the wrong culinary choices that we are making and through their healthy and organic food menu, they wish to inculcate the habit of opting for freshly prepared meals which has the least amount of artificial flavours, chemicals and toxins in it.

All their breads are locally sourced from a French couple, all sauces made in house every morning, dairy products come from a local organic farm, herbal teas sourced from a curator in Dehradun and cheese are non processed. They are using honey and jaggery in their desserts and granola bars. And trust me, if you eat their granola, you won’t be asking anything for the next few bars.

Melon Feta: A salad which is first feasted through your eyes! Freshly and juicy scooped balls of musk & water melon, arugula, edible pansies and creamy feta cheese topped with pickled ginger – all the flavours bursting on your palate. Highly recommended.

Vietnamese glass noodles salad: Again a cold salad with the finest crunchy glass noodles, perfectly julienned vegetables drenched in the garlic soy dressing and topped with a generous dosage of sesame seeds and peanuts. Highly recommended.

Avocado Chorizo: Oh my! The creamy guacamole spread on a soft toast with crunchy periphery and topped with crispy pork chorizo bits and luscious goat cheese – a maelstrom of mouth gasmic flavours. Highly recommended.

Green Goddess Sandwich: A jolly good sandwich after a long time! A multi grain sandwich enclosing boiled chicken, crunchy lettuce & spinach imparting bitter flavour and avocado & pesto providing the necessary punch. One won’t be enough. Highly recommended.

Hummus bowl with Sumac Za’tar grilled chicken: A whole meal in itself! The hummus is the freakiest I have ever had as it has tahini mixed with it. The grilled chicken is topped in Za’tar spices thus rendering it tangy and spicy. Highly recommended.

Whole wheat brownie with Nutella: The brownie is grainy and is fashioned from whole wheat instead of refined flour. The Nutella topping is gooey as expected and a wonderful addition.

Feel good smoothie bowl: Their smoothie bowls are hugely humongous! I mean a dense yet light bed of strawberry, blueberry and raspberry yogurt smoothie topped with granola, fresh fruits and all sorts of seeds. As pointed by the owners, a complete meal in itself.

It is commendable what these ladies are trying to achieve. I, myself, am getting conscious about my food choices and it feels good to meet such like minded individuals who want to spread awareness through their work before it is too late.

So many startups catering to the healthy food based dishes and people are willing to try these out due to increased awareness about their benefits to our bodies. Fresh Menu, Lean Body meals, World in a box and Rawleaf can be called as the main heroes of this market but they have got a tough competition now from the recently opened Health Nuts.

The packaging is quite pretty for me – a section of strawberry adorning the logo. It definitely creates a good first impression and continues on with these amazing dishes :

Lettuce and kale salad : What more do you want in a salad when it is freshly made, healthy and crunchy? Talk about crispy lettuce, soft kale and olives and boom, if you have a winner! Not to forget their lovely dressing – a type of tartar sauce which they have improvised and I loved the change.

Poached chicken dimsums : After having poached dimsums, I am thinking of switching to them because they are super healthy and ohhh-so-fresh! The minced chicken is finely made and there are no added zingy or spicy flavours in it. The best part is that the skin is made of wheat flour and it is thin enough to not let you feel its bulkiness. Wheat momos are pretty heavy, but hey, health nuts just made them lighter and tastier!

Chicken Powerhouse : Juicy chicken steaks topped with garlic based tomato sauce and broccoli. The dish is quite good to taste but the broccoli was not fresh – you can actually see the yellow portions.

Brown Rice : The usual brown rice can get monotonous, so why not spruce it up with the fine jullienes of bell peppers and tomatoes and small broccoli cubes? Kind of like our very own Pulao. Power packed nutrients and taste in one hell of a dish!

Strawberry and chocolate yoghurt parfait : The combination of chocolate brownie and sweet yoghurt can work well and this dish proved it. The brownie is so well grounded and mixed well with the freshest and smooth yoghurt and topped with strawberry syrup. The presence of small bits of walnuts provide a crunchy texture to an otherwise smooth parfait.

Dark Chocolate Kheer : Not recommended at all! The kheer tastes as if it has not stewed well and the presence of long grained rice instead of the medium or small medium variety make this dish a downer. When you are making a kheer, it is better to use smaller grained rice so that when the kheer gets thick, the small grains complement it well. The presence of dark chocolate makes it difficult to eat.

Food, food and sometimes too much of it. Don’t we all get bored of the same chicken tikka or daal makhani? It is cooked at our homes by us and our parents and served at all the north Indian restaurants and weddings. Sometimes, I wonder the sheer monotony of the same dishes.

To break this drudgery, The Grill Kitchen has come up with a novel taste to the same old dishes. A slight twist in the recipes and boom, you have a different conept. Not like serving the old wine in a new bottle and not overhauling the traditional recipes.

The food explorer in me was delighted to savour their lovely preparations:

Prawn dimsum: Who says that dishes fashioned out of smelly prawns need to have a strong whiff of sea? Subduing that unwanted aroma is where the skill of the chef is tested and if he/she is able to achieve this, then hats off! These prawn dimsums tasted like prawns but did not smell too much like them. The thin skin enclosing excellently flavoured minced prawn is a paradisiacal dish for prawn and dimsum lovers. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Bhatti chicken: It was way too tangy and dry. There was rum added in it but that should have made it a bit bitter not tangy.

Galouti kebab: Mellow and melt in the mouth made with the finest mutton mince – HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Kadhai chicken: The dhaba style chicken served here is pure love. The medley of juicy chicken pieces drenched in a thick gravy of green bell peppers, tomatoes, onions and cumin seeds is sure to entice you. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Daal makhani: Decadency at its best! A hard core non vegetarian like me does not drool over daal makhani but this one forced me to. The daal served here was so flavourful, hot, creamy and spicy with every aspect in balance. Once I started having this with their chewy maida naan, I could not control myself. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Roasted chicken in herbs: This one should be on your priority tasting list if you love the sort of chicken in which the juicy flesh falls off the bones. This one was a s succulent as a chicken can get and was roasted in tangy Zaatar herbs and Indian spices. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The reason I am giving them a moderate rating is because they screwed up the order when I placed it for the first time. No one was picking up the phone on the number mentioned in Zomato order and I had to call on a number mentioned on the site. However, their meals are way too yummy, nutritious and fulfilling. Here are a few of them that I have tried so far :

Piri piri cottage cheese steak : Expect this to be quite spicy due to the presence of Peri-peri but the brown rice balances the spiciness of the steaks. The sautéed mushrooms are a delight to eat along with the veggies.

Herb grilled chicken fuel : This one dish is enough for a humongous eater like me! There were about three to four chicken breasts generously flavoured with dried thyme and rosemary on a bed of brown rice. The accompaniments were garlic mash and grilled vegetables. The garlic mash had a smooth texture and was subtle in taste. The grilled vegetables – French beans, mushrooms, broccoli and zucchini were lightly sautéed with herbs and were good to eat.

Vegan Garden salad : Chickpea and pomegranate salad is a healthy deal when accompanied with pineapple pieces and tossed in a light tangy dressing.

Turbo Fuel : Fish in lemon butter sauce served with mushroom brown rice and sautéed vegetables is a pathetic dish. Or maybe, I tasted the pathetic one. The brown rice were actually white in colour and were super dry and difficult to eat. The fish was bland and was not grilled properly. The mushrooms and the vegetables tasted as if they were stale.

Pesto Fuel : Cottage cheese slices dipped in pesto basil sauce and served with brown rice and vegetables. Again the rice was white and dry. The vegetables were again too bad. The sauce was a bit good – tangy tomatoes and bitter basil pesto giving their unique flavours.
